Dragon Fruit Farming in Kenya: A Premium Crop on the Rise

Dragon fruit — also called pitaya — is one of Kenya's most exciting new crops. The pink-skinned fruit is striking, nutritious, and commands premium prices in supermarkets, hotels, and export markets. Best of all, it grows where many other fruits struggle: warm, semi-arid lowlands.
Why dragon fruit is a smart investment
- Sells for KSh 300–800 per fruit in supermarkets and upscale hotels.
- Tolerates drought once established — needs less water than most fruits.
- Starts fruiting in 12–18 months.
- Produces for 20+ years from a single planting.
- Strong export demand from the Middle East and Europe.
Climate and site selection
Dragon fruit is a climbing cactus. It thrives in warm areas with full sun, between sea level and 1,700m altitude. Counties like Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Kilifi, Kwale, Taita Taveta, and the lower zones of Murang'a and Embu are all suitable.
Avoid waterlogged sites — the root system rots quickly in heavy clay. Sandy loam is ideal.
Trellising and spacing
Each plant climbs a concrete post 1.8–2m tall, topped with a metal frame to support the trailing stems. This is the biggest upfront cost — budget KSh 1,000–1,500 per post.
- Spacing: 2m × 2m, with 4 plants per post.
- Density: about 1,100 plants per acre.
- Post material: reinforced concrete or treated timber.
Care, harvest, and yield
Water once a week during establishment and during flowering. Apply NPK 17:17:17 every two months and supplement with foliar potassium during fruit set.
Flowers open at night and are pollinated by moths and bats. In areas with low pollinator populations, hand pollination at dusk dramatically increases yields.
A mature plant produces 25–40 fruits per year over 3–5 cycles. A well-managed acre yields 5,000–15,000 fruits per year, worth KSh 1.5–6 million depending on price.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does dragon fruit take to fruit?
- Dragon fruit starts flowering and fruiting 12–18 months after planting and reaches full production by year 3. A single plant continues producing for 20 years or more.
- What climate does dragon fruit need?
- Dragon fruit thrives in warm, semi-arid areas between sea level and 1,700m altitude. It tolerates drought once established but does not tolerate waterlogging. Counties like Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, and the coastal region are ideal.
- How much does dragon fruit sell for in Kenya?
- Farm-gate prices range from KSh 150–400 per fruit, while supermarkets and upscale hotels pay KSh 300–800 per fruit. Export prices are higher still.
- How many dragon fruit plants per acre?
- At the standard 2m × 2m spacing with 4 plants per post, one acre holds approximately 1,100 plants on 275 concrete posts.
